iPhone Battery Draining Fast After the Latest iOS Update? Here's What's Actually Happening

by Ishaan Seth September, 2026

For an iPhone user, iOS updates are routine. However, this is the moment many iPhone users dread, as it means an inexplicable battery drain they know all too well.

If this is something you’re encountering for the first time, it’s understandable to wonder if something is wrong with your mobile phone.

For new iPhone users who are not used to this experience, it can be panic-inducing as they may think their iPhone battery, and therefore the device itself, is dying.

If your iPhone battery started draining significantly faster after a recent iOS update, you don’t need to worry for two reasons:

1- You’re not alone.

2- This is temporary and fixable.

In this post, we’re helping you understand what’s happening with your iPhone, why the battery is draining fast after the update, what to do to fix it, and how to uncover underlying reasons if the drain isn’t temporary.

why ios updates cause temporary battery drain

The first part of the good news is that the battery drainage that happens on an iPhone after an iOS update happens for a reason; you just don’t see it.

Think of an iOS update as a home renovation. Once the work is done and the workers leave your home, there’s a phase where you must clean up after the renovation and put everything back where it belongs. An “energy-draining” process, right?

This is what your iPhone is doing in the background once the iOS update is done:

  • Reindexing / Spotlight indexing: Your iPhone has an index that lets it read and access all information stored on it, including files, images, contacts, videos, and more. After a major update, this index has to be redone, often from scratch, if the iOS update changed how the device reads the data stored in it. This process runs in the background for several hours, causing processor and battery consumption.
  • Background app refresh: Every iOS update comes with a feature that automatically triggers apps on your iPhone to check for new available data, such as app updates, and run those app updates in the background, even if you’re not using the app regularly.
  • iCloud and Photos sync: Your photos are already on your iPhone and synced to your iCloud account. However, major iOS updates usually include new syncing protocols, database structure, and learning models. This requires your iPhone to update and re-upload metadata for the already-synced photos and the entire iCloud library.

how long should the background activities after an ios update last?

The main factors that affect how long background activities last post-iOS updates are:

  • The size of the iOS update
  • The size of your iPhone’s internal memory.
  • The number of apps installed on your iPhone.
  • The size of your iCloud library.

For normal updates, the background re-indexing and activities usually take from 24 to 72 hours (3 days). For major iOS updates or for devices with 512GB or more of data in their internal memory, this time may extend up to 5 days.

So, as long as you’re still within those 5 days, you have nothing to worry about.

If, however, the battery draining continues for a full week or more after the iOS update, then there might be a bigger issue that you need to look into regarding your battery health.

quick fixes: what to do right now

Apple has a set of recommendations to address an iPhone draining its battery in general. However, for a newly found battery drain after the iOS update, there are additional or special measures you can take, including:

  1. Put your iPhone on the charger overnight and leave it alone so it can finish background activities faster.
  2. Reduce background activity by disabling the background app refresh from your iPhone’s Settings app; go to “General”, then “Background App Refresh”.
  3. Turn off location access for apps that don’t need it.
  4. Go to Settings → Battery Usage and check which apps are consuming the battery the most.
  5. Turn on Low Power Mode until the iPhone finishes its background re-indexing and other activities.
  6. Check for new iOS updates. If the problem persists, Apple usually releases an additional update to resolve the common problem.

when it's not the update: signs your battery actually needs attention

We’ve already mentioned the first sign that iPhone battery draining is caused by battery degradation, not power overconsumption due to background activities, which is draining for over a week after the iOS update. Other signs include:

  • Your iPhone starts overheating during normal use without any processor-intensive activities.
  • Your iPhone battery percentage drops suddenly or jumps erratically.
  • Your iPhone is at 30-20%, then it suddenly shuts down.

All these signs mean that your iPhone’s battery health is degrading.

Here’s how to check your iPhone’s battery health and what it means:

Open the Settings app and go to “Battery → Battery Health & Charging”

  • A healthy, normal battery should be between 100% and 85%.
  • The battery is considered to be starting to degrade at 80-84% health.
  • Your iPhone battery will need servicing if it shows health below 80%.

It’s important to note that if you find your iPhone’s battery health below 80%, this degradation is not caused by the iOS update; it was just exposed by it.

your options if the iphone battery is genuinely degraded

If you find that your iPhone’s battery health is indeed below 80%, it’s time to take action, not just because it will affect your iPhone's performance and put unnecessary strain on other components, but because a battery below 80% health will continue to degrade and will increasingly affect your iPhone's day-to-day functionality. It's worth acting on sooner rather than later.

Option 1: Replace the battery

If your iPhone is still relatively new, in good condition, or you’re just attached to that model and don’t want to change it yet, check out certified battery replacements by Apple. You must know, however, that if your iPhone is out of warranty, a battery replacement from Apple is going to cost between £85 and £109 based on your iPhone model. So, it’s worth checking the battery replacement cost against the current value of the iPhone itself first.

Option 2: Upgrade to a refurbished iPhone

If the battery replacement service is going to be too expensive, the financially wise decision is to replace the iPhone itself. You can trade in your old iPhone at QwikFone and buy a refurbished iPhone with battery health of 85% or above, which is an opportunity to get a newer model with higher specs, with significant savings.

your iphone battery draining is a problem with easy solutions

Whether your iPhone battery draining is caused by temporary background activities that will subside within a few days, or a genuine degradation in battery health, easy, inexpensive solutions are available.

Be patient for a few days and make sure the update is truly complete. If your iPhone doesn’t return to normal or the battery health is already showing signs of wear, you have other options. You can trade in your current iPhone with QwikFone and put its value toward a refurbished model with verified battery health of 85% or above and a 12-month warranty. Browse our refurbished iPhones to choose your next model with savings of up to 40%.
